FESTIVAL OF NEW TRUMPET MUSIC - Jaimie Branch with Wing Walker Orchestra

8pm – Anteloper

Jaimie Branch (tp), Jason Nazary (dr)

ANTELOPER is the electric brain child of JAIMIE BRANCH (fly or die, high life) and JASON NAZARY (little women, helado negro, bear in heaven). Branch and Nazary have been playing together as trumpeter and drummer for years, since meeting at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2002, but in this duo both musicians include synthesizers to push further into the spectral space ship ether. With deep rhythmic passages, telepathic improvisations and effortless melodic negotiations, Anteloper pushes forward, swinging its horns all the while.

9:30pm – Wing Walker Orchestra feat. Jaimie Branch

Drew Williams (bcl), Brad Mulholland (as), Eric Trudel (ts), John Blevins (tp), Danny Gouker (tp), Jaimie Branch (tp), Karl Lyden (tb), Nick Grinder (tb), Jeff McLaughlin (g), Marta Sanchez (p), Adam Hopkins (b), Deric Dickens (dr)

The WING WALKER ORCHESTRA is a collaborative large ensemble based in New York City featuring original compositions and arrangements by the musicians in the band. The confluence of ideas from multiple composer/improvisers gives the orchestra’s sound groundbreaking musical diversity. 2018 marks the third annual collaboration between the orchestra and the Festival of New Trumpet Music with past guests including Ralph Alessi, Shane Endsley, Jonathan Finlayson, and Jason Palmer. This year’s performance will highlight the inimitable trumpeter JAIMIE BRANCH with new arrangements of her acclaimed International Anthem release “Fly or Die.”

8pm - Elijah Shiffer and the Robber Crabs

Elijah Shiffer - alto sax, Andrew Shillito - guitar/banjo, Mat Muntz - bass, Matt Honor - drums

The Robber Crabs are a collective for exploring the rare genre of avant-trad jazz. Their style pits early jazz from the 1910s-'20s against contemporary avant-garde improvisational and compositional techniques. They will be recording later this summer.

10pm - Matterhorn

John Blevins - Trumpet, effects, Drew Williams - Bass Clarinet, effects, Jeff McLaughlin - Guitar, effects, Adam Hopkins - Electric Bass, Nathan Ellman-Bell - Drums

An electrifying confluence of jazz, rock, and the avant-garde, Matterhorn's eponymous debut album was co-produced by Shane Endsley of the acclaimed post-rock/jazz outfit Kneebody and released on pfMENTUM records. Matterhorn create a genre-defying music of explosive horn lines searing through churning, ever-shifting rhythmic patterns.

"As far as debut recordings go, Matterhorn is about as good as it gets…cogent, beautifully realized—both compositionally and in its execution—and a joy to listen to.” — Dave Wayne, AllAboutJazz.com

9pm  - Predicate Trio with Josh Sinton, Chris Hoffman & Tom Rainey

“Josh Sinton has been kicking (and screaming) around Brooklyn since 2004. Last year he realized that playing with cellist Chris Hoffman and drummer Tom Rainey is the most consistently fun thing he’s thought to do in a while. So he’s sticking with it and writing a few more things for the trio to play. He’s got a new record coming out with another of his trios (musicianer) and you can find that also on planet internet (or on Iluso Records). If you come to this show, Sinton promises that it won’t be boring. Definitely not. Ever.”

10PM - Timo Vollbrecht ~ Fly Magic

Timo Vollbrecht - saxophone & clarinet | Keisuke Matsuno - guitar & pedals | Martin Nevin - bass | Jason Burger - drums

FLY MAGIC is the band of luminously fine saxophonist-bandleader Timo Vollbrecht. Based in New York and originating from Berlin's progressive music scene, he creates a magical blend of emotional intensity and vivacious energy, resulting in a genuine sound that often depicts the sensation of flying. The band transcends the limitations of musical genre by combining elements from contemporary jazz, post-rock, minimalism, new music, and experimental sound culture. Cultural diversity is one of their main sources of inspiration and tours have brought them to Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and the US.

At Halyards they will present brand-new, freshly composed music.

9PM - Angela Morris/Erica Dicker Duo

Angela Morris - tenor saxophone
Erica Dicker - violin

If Brooklyn’s music circles draw a Venn diagram, saxophonist-composer Angela Morris thrives in the loop between avant-jazz and pop. Originally from Toronto, Canada and based in NYC, she has performed throughout North America and Europe. Her vocal group Rallidae released their new album, “Turned, and Was,” in November 2016 on the NYC-based label Gold Bolus Recordings; their debut “Paper Birds” was praised as “an exceptional debut by and exciting and innovative new band.” Morris composes and co-leads several groups, including a 17-piece big band – she is an alumna of the BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop lead by Jim McNeely and studied composition with the Grammy-nominated jazz composer Darcy James Argue. She is a member of collaborative groups The Skellettes (with Nathaniel Morgan – alto saxophone, Jason Ajemian – bass, Booker Stardrum – drums), Pep Talk (with Nathaniel Morgan – alto saxophone, Owen Stewart-Roberson – guitar),  and TMT Trio (with Cat Toren – piano, Anthony Taddeo – drums). In addition to her own projects, she has performed with Helado Negro, Jason Ajemian’s Folk-Lords, Myra Melford, and Erica Eso.

Erica Dicker works to span bridges between the worlds of traditional and experimental music performance. An active concert artist, Erica has appeared as concerto soloist, most recently with the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, and also writes and performs her own music, exploring the idiomatic modalities and textures of her instrument. Committed to creative collaboration with living composers and musical innovation in both the classical concert hall and nontraditional contexts, Erica is a founding member of the contemporary chamber music collective Till By Turning, an ensemble devoted to reinforcing the modern canon, championing new works, and linking creative educational programs to their repertoire. She is also violinist in Katherine Young’s Pretty Monsters, as well as Vaster Than Empires, an electro-acoustic collaboration with composer and sound artist Paul Schuette and percussionist Allen Otte. She has premiered works by many composers including solo works written for her by Olivia Block, Turkar Gasimzada, Ryan Ingebritsen and Katherine Young.

To be or not to be; that is the quest. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to sling the fated arrow or perhaps upon perchancing to dine with they who so forscorned thy scorn. Uptown traffic, downtown traffic, uptown traffic, downtown traffic. Forsooth! Thy own bare bodkin among the fated flowers would smell thy smell who smelleth early and who smelleth late. Upon a rapturous deconstruction emerges the youth and from the youth emerges: For Trees & Birds. Never upon never has the sky cried so clear a night.
